Forager 1 Classes

Intergenerational Spring Mushroom Foray

Date and Time: April 11 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Location: Location will be provided a week prior to class, as the weather and temperature dictate where we may best find mushrooms in the area.
RSVP and reserve your spot: Registration is on the Foxhaven website. *Note: The class is NOT at Foxhaven

Class Description:
This beginner’s workshop will introduce you to the easy to identify, edible species of mushrooms that can be found in the Maryland area during the spring months. The class will begin with a talk about the ethics and safety of wild foraging mushrooms. We will also talk about how mushrooms grow, what their characteristics are, and how to spot the best habitats to increase your chances of success.

At the end of class, we will come back together and talk about how to verify our finds. How to use field guides, dichotomous keys, and online resources will be discussed. We will then talk about how to prepare and preserve different species and celebrate all that we have learned by cooking up some of our edible finds and enjoying the gifts of the woods. Edible mushrooms are not guaranteed, but we always have plenty to talk about along the way.

What to Bring:
This class is hands on, so come prepared to walk in the woods. We will likely be off the beaten path, so good woods shoes/boots are a must. We also recommend bringing some water, a knife, a collecting basket, a camera and/or notebook, tick protection, and paper lunch bags to separate your finds. *Suitable for ages 7 and up

PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT IS OFFSITE, NOT LOCATED AT FOX HAVEN. REGISTRANTS WILL RECEIVE THE EVENT ADDRESS A WEEK BEFORE CLASS.
Meet your teacher, Jared Urchek!
Jared is an acupuncturist, mycologist, and naturalist, has been studying various healing arts for over 15 years. His undergraduate degree in Psychology, Environmental Studies, and Traditional Eastern Arts led him to a Masters in Acupuncture program from the Institute of Taoist Education and Acupuncture.
